Of course, I couldn’t come away without a few little finds on my trip. I didn’t go too crazy, though. New York in a bag is one of those gifts you give to your child that you hope they bore of soon so you can take possesion. I found this charming little book in the Yoya shop along with a couple old issues of Milk I didn’t have. And couldn’t resist this beautiful set of Nara postcards in the MoMA shop.
i’m back!
It was a wonderful, exhausting and inspiring trip. Here are a few of my photos…
Loved, loved our hotel. We stayed at The Standard in the meat packing district. Great views and highly entertaining people watching in the lobby. We made the museum rounds, American Museum of Natural History (thanks Emily for the tip), MoMA and the Guggenheim. And spent a gloriously sunny day in Central Park. I hope to have an excuse to go back again soon!
playground
Last year I was contacted by an amazing woman finishing up work on a documentary called The Playground. It is about the heavy and shocking, but neccesary, topic of the trafficking of children for commercial sexual exploitation. I lent some of my art to the marketing of this film that is debuting this week at the Tribecca Film Festival. The film features the artwork of the amazing Yoshitomo Nara, and is the first time he has allowed his work to be animated. Which brings me to the reason I am heading to New York in a few days. As a way to continue to bring awareness to this topic, the Nest foundation was created. In benefit of it, a gala with a silent auction featuring art from Jeff Koons, Joanne Greenbaum, Todd DiCurcio and one of my paintings is being held. I am beyond excited (and humbled and terrified) to be featured next to these amazing artists. You can go here to learn more about Playgrond and Nest.
busy, busy
First my family was sick, then my computer, yuck. Now (knock on wood) all are on the mend and just in time. I am so excited to share that I am off to NYC later this week! I have a painting at an event that I will tell you more about tomorrow, but needless to say, I can’t wait! This will be my first time there (if you don’t count transferring airports) so if anyone has any great tips, please share! MoMA is on my list, and the moma store where I plan on getting this…
isn’t it perdy?
off to paint….
and then there were…
bangs
I haven’t had bangs since the days of the vertical, hairspray laden, waterfall bangs (just dated myself didn’t I).
edit: just noticed I now have the same haircut as in the print below, hmmmm…..
new prints
I just added a few new prints to my shop!
daily inspiration
I’ve finally gotten around to updating my side panel to show the evergrowing list of blogs I enjoy stopping by. Whenever I find a new blog that I love, I get that feeling like when you find the perfect book! That’s how I felt when I saw small magazine just started a new blog. The magazine is always a treat, now I get my daily fix, as well.
yes, please….
here’s to a weekend with only sun in the forecast!

getting down to it
I recently figured something out about myself. The more I have on my plate the more inspired I am. This seems so counterintuitive doesn’t it? The more I have to do, the more I want to do! Good though, I suppose. I am getting ready for a couple shows over the next few months (more on those soon!), working on portraits, and suddenly feel the need to start some new work.
Here is a piece I finished several months ago and will be offering as a print soon.
oh, and a big thank you to Kristen and Liz for including my sketch portraits in their mother’s day gift guide!
flying books
Loving these flying books in a childs room over at Cookie.
and the little gnome table is pretty fantastic, too. I had seen this guy over at CB2 and thought it might look fun on our front porch.
new over at poppytalk
The new poppytalk handmade market is up with some wonderful items for mother’s day (it’s May 10!). So I thought I’d pick some of my favorites, my own and others, that would make really lovely gifts. There’s still time to order a portrait, if you’d like it by mother’s day please contact me soon and mention when you’d like it by.
1. little pendant at my etsy store 2. custom portrait sketch at my etsy store 3. custom line portrait available at my website 4. I love you bowl at palomas nest 5. custom stationary available at cake + milk paperie
easter bday
I used to love it when my birthday fell on easter. This year, it’s pretty darn close. We’re keeping both pretty low key this year. Is that a sign that I’m getting old?
Anyway, saw these yummy lovelies at bakerella, and think I will take a whirl at them tomorrow. How cute are they?
How to build a campfire and such
I just added a few new prints to my shop. True story, my daughter had a friend over a few weeks ago and she saw the campfire piece sitting out:
her: “what are those girls doing?”
me: “building a campfire”
her: “it looks like they’re using a chair”
me: “they are”
her (to my daughter) “your moms weird”
it’s beautiful here…

back to work
I have been radio silent the last few days enjoying the summerlike weather. It was just too hard to motivate myself to work when it was that glorious out. Now the clouds are back so I am back at it. I am working on some portraits and want to finish up several new pieces I started a while back. I’m really good at starting new paintings and then become a foot drager when it comes to finishing.
We had a nice visit with family this past weekend, visited the chinese garden downtown and had some tea. It was a banner weekend for my picky eater, he made, ate and loved sushi and tried and loved tea!
happy weekend!
The portrait sketch print is now available on my website and at my etsy store! We have family coming to town later today for the weekend and they’re bringing some gorgeous weather with them (think sun!). Have a wonderful weekend!
new portraits!
In time for mother’s day or any day. I wanted to share these sweet, simple (and totally affordable) sketch portraits. I hand draw the portrait based on a submitted photo and digitally place it on an old book page (I love the color and texture this adds). They are then printed on gorgeous Hahnemuhle Museum Etching paper. They will be available in two sizes, 8″x10″($35) and 13″x19″($50). I love, love these, especially in white frames. I’m thinking a whole wall in our bedroom would look just right with these. These will be available starting tomorrow on both my website and etsy. I hope you like them!
just the ticket
The journey journal from cracked desings seems like the perfect little book to fill with pictures, tickets and notes from a trip. I have a fun little trip coming up later this month this would be perfect for…
little adornment
How sweet are these little bracelets done by Emma Cassi. Oh and the packaging just feels like spring. She is so talented, her blog is one of my very favorite stops.
