(re)organize

So, not the most original way to start the new year, but a definite neccesity around these parts.  This weekend I am reorganizing my office and adjacent family room.  How we use these spaces has changed and I can’t wait to have everything all done.  My desk and the family computer will move into the family room which will open up some much needed space in my studio.  I don’t really use the desk for more than a place to set my laptop, so in its place will go a much smaller table.  Also, I’d like to add a couple of task lights to my work table.  I love theses, but will probably opt for some cheaper Ikea versions.  A little paint, organizing and art hanging and I’ll be ready to start the new year off on the right foot!

Here are some of my inspiration images:

words

I recently got an email from Hannah Stephenson letting me know about a poem she wrote in response to one of my paintings.  Love that.  Love how ideas can morph and change and grow from one thing to the next.  A photo that inspires and idea, the inspires a photo, that inspires a painting, that inspires a poem and on and on.  Hannah has a blog, The Storialist, go check it out!

Stethoscope
Stethoscope

There, there, the stethoscope says
to the one being scoped, measured.

The breath-warmed diaphragm rests
near your shoulder blade like a palm

or pushes into the skin over your heart,
pledging loyalty, longing. I solemnly

vow that this is my body, these sounds.
Struck piano wire and typewriter key,

spinning dial to a combination lock
and roulette wheel. Clicking turn signal.

Deep breath, the doctor instructs us.
Then, breathe normally, as you would

usually. To see inside the sarcophagus
of the body, we observe survival: oxygen,

heartbeat. We can take turns examining,
listening. Climb up on the table next to me.

Trust me, I’m a professional. Let me plug
my ears with the clamor inside of you

you were only waiting

Today I got a last minute birthday wish idea for my husband.  I decided to make a wall sized bday card/wall instalation for him with a line from the Beatle’s (his favorite band) song ‘Black Bird”.  I’ve made these before for other things and love them.  It’s pretty easy to do and makes a big statement.  Here’s how I did it!

walllyrics2.jpg

I use yellow plastic encased rope that has a wire running through it, that I bought at my local hardware store.  I believe it was marketed as laudry wire?  Anyhow, I just shaped it and used a my leatherman to pinch anagles and twine to hold spots in place.  Then, just spray paint and hang!  I need to do a little adjusting to make it hang more evenly, but I’m pretty happy with it, hope he likes it!

butter on toast

Happy 2011!  How were your holiday’s?  I have to admit, I am happy to be back to my normal routine and a clean house.

This year I’m not making a huge list of things to do/not do.  I think I will just try and take it all as it comes and enjoy the little things, like butter on toast and sparkly toe nails.

guest post

Hi, did you have a nice holiday?  I have slept in the last two days (heaven).  I am easing back into the work week, I think step one will be cleaning my studio which currently looks like a small tornado did it in.

I have a guest post today over at one of my all time favorite blogs (!) The Jealous Curator.  So if you are curious what artist I am jealous of, hop on over there!

to you and yours

Have a wonderful holiday!  I’ve been absent working literally day and night getting orders off.  I had forgotten what bone weary was, not since having newborns have I been this sleep deprived!  So, I’m taking the next few days off to relax and spend time with my family, whom I feel like I’ve barely seen this past month.

Thank you so so much for your support this year!

nearly there

I am nearing the end of my crazy season, with most of the orders on their way and the rest nearly ready!  I’ve had far too many late nights to count and am looking forward to a week of sleeping in (with the exception of xmas day, of course!)  and doing a lot of nothing.  I spent my late nights watching 4 seasons of 30 Rock and countless movies.  My conclusion, comedies get you through the night.  On that note, I just saw this and thought I’d share it for a laugh (especially Portlanders).

oh tannenbaum

I took my only break from working this weekend so we could get our tree.  Even though the house is not even close to being decorated for Christmas, at least it now smells ready!

gift guide-kids

Here are some of my favorite gifts for kids this year.

This year my daughter is squarely in the ‘pre-teen’ category, which at first left me stumped, but since she was never a ‘toy’ kid, I think it has actually gotten easier for me to come up with ideas.  My son is all about making things, especially mechanical things so I am loving automatons.  In fact, I wouldn’t mind the little boat one below!  Enjoy!

working away

I am busy working away getting orders out for Christmas.  If you have already ordered, I will be finishing up and getting your portrait off to you soon!  If you are interested in a portrait, I am no longer taking orders for Christmas, BUT I have gift certificates available!  With each gift certificate I include several postcards with images of my work as well as a bonus ‘little print.’  Please contact me with any questions!  Here are a couple new ‘little prints’ in my etsy shop and an example of what comes with each gift certificate.

Also, tomorrow I will be adding several ‘little paintings’ to my shop (including the two above) as well as sharing my favorite gift finds for kids!

back from NYC

I had a great time, but it’s always so, so nice to get home.  The Martha Stewart holiday sale was wonderful, so many great things and it was fun to see the MS offices (and Martha doing a little shopping herself before doors opened).

off to new york!

I am leaving tomorrow, bright and early, for New York City!  I am so excited.  A dear friend is coming along so we’re making a girls weekend out of it.  If you’re in nyc, please please stop by and say hi to me at the Martha Stewart holiday sale.  It is from noon to 6pm at the Starrett-Lehigh Building, 601 West 26th Street (between Eleventh and Twelfth avenues), 9th Floor.   I hope to see you there!

I will try and pop in with updates, or you can follow me on twitter!

business cards

I’ve never really had business cards as such, instead always had postcards.   So, I finally decided to make some up.  There is definitely an advantage to them, small, portable, easy to always have tucked in my wallet/bag.  Here is what I came up with.  One side is clean and simple, my info.  The other side I adhered canvas printed with a section of one of my paintings.

an early snow

We got a small dusting of snow here, the earliest I can remember ever having any.  Perfect for staying in.  The kids are off of school and have spent the last day sequestered upstairs building an elaborate castle out cardboard, allowing me to stay busy working on portraits and prep for the Martha Stewart holiday sale.
