a few things for the weekend

So, I am happy to announce that I am officially out of my creative funk and back with a vengence!  I am working away on quite a few different things and excited about all of them.  I will have more to share soon, for now here are some of the things that are inspiring me right now:

Pinterest, oh how I love thee.  A great place to go when you need a little happy boost.  Never fails.

I’m sure you’ve seen the rainbow cakes that have been making the blog rounds.  Well, I found these for my daughter’s bday cake tonight, rainbow candles!

meh

thrulookingglass.jpg

Maybe because it’s the end of winter, I don’t know, but lately I’ve been feeling meh.  Of course having a sick kid last week and then subsequently catching said sick kids’ virus didn’t help, but it’s getting frustrating.  Any great inspiration pick me ups out there?  Since I don’t have a machine that I just turn on to put out paintings, I can either force my self to push through it and hope good work comes out the other side, or let myself feel through it (and hope customers are patient) until that energy and inspiration comes back.  I usually do a bit of both as I tend to go through these cycles a couple times a year.  I also know that the pendulum will swing back and new work will come, my passion will again get ignited and a ton of great stuff will come out of it.  Until then, thoughts? Do you experience similar cycles in your life?

pink horses for a pink world

pinkhorses.jpg

I spent a little time last night working on some details for my daughter’s upcoming birthday party.  I’ll give you one guess what we will be doing.  I am now sort of obsessed with this image and can’t wait for a little time to explore it in a painting. I will no doubt share some bday photos after the big day!

collaboration

I recently came across this drawing my son had done of a horse.  I love it!  I had planned on framing it up but then I got an idea.  I wanted to see it large and BOLD, so I took a huge canvas I had and replicated his drawing in paint.  I tried to stay true to his design and just add a little punch to the lines.  I love how it came out, what do you think?

words

I recently got an email from Hannah Stephenson letting me know about a poem she wrote in response to one of my paintings.  Love that.  Love how ideas can morph and change and grow from one thing to the next.  A photo that inspires and idea, the inspires a photo, that inspires a painting, that inspires a poem and on and on.  Hannah has a blog, The Storialist, go check it out!

Stethoscope
Stethoscope

There, there, the stethoscope says
to the one being scoped, measured.

The breath-warmed diaphragm rests
near your shoulder blade like a palm

or pushes into the skin over your heart,
pledging loyalty, longing. I solemnly

vow that this is my body, these sounds.
Struck piano wire and typewriter key,

spinning dial to a combination lock
and roulette wheel. Clicking turn signal.

Deep breath, the doctor instructs us.
Then, breathe normally, as you would

usually. To see inside the sarcophagus
of the body, we observe survival: oxygen,

heartbeat. We can take turns examining,
listening. Climb up on the table next to me.

Trust me, I’m a professional. Let me plug
my ears with the clamor inside of you

you were only waiting

Today I got a last minute birthday wish idea for my husband.  I decided to make a wall sized bday card/wall instalation for him with a line from the Beatle’s (his favorite band) song ‘Black Bird”.  I’ve made these before for other things and love them.  It’s pretty easy to do and makes a big statement.  Here’s how I did it!

I use yellow plastic encased rope that has a wire running through it, that I bought at my local hardware store.  I believe it was marketed as laudry wire?  Anyhow, I just shaped it and used a my leatherman to pinch anagles and twine to hold spots in place.  Then, just spray paint and hang!  I need to do a little adjusting to make it hang more evenly, but I’m pretty happy with it, hope he likes it!

business cards

I’ve never really had business cards as such, instead always had postcards.   So, I finally decided to make some up.  There is definitely an advantage to them, small, portable, easy to always have tucked in my wallet/bag.  Here is what I came up with.  One side is clean and simple, my info.  The other side I adhered canvas printed with a section of one of my paintings.

new prints now available!

I just added some of my new mini prints to my etsy store.  They measure 5″x5″, the actual image is 4″x4″.  I also put my limited edition of 10 each prints, of three of my most popular paintings, All Together, Girl in the Yellow Suit, and In the Depths .  They measure 24″x36″ with the image measuring 23″X23″.  They turned out just beautiful!

the art of display

I’ve been having fun planning all the little details for my little winter table.  I already had most of what I need, but I got this amazing bee hive string dispenser on etsy recently (here).  So, now I will be wrapping up paintings that are purchased with some brown paper and string!

quiet paintings

A couple more small paintings.  I’m sharing them together because despite the difference in palette and subject they both feel like quiet winter scenes to me.  These will both be available at Little Winter (which is next weekend!).

littles

These little paintings have become my morning warm up.  I can’t wait to get started and find it hard to put them aside and work on orders and portraits.  Here’s another I recently did.  I will have quite a few at little winter and several at the Crafty Wonderland pop up shop.

perfect fall

I suppose I am a true Northwesterner as I love when the rain comes and I can turn on lamps, light candles and put a fire on.  The past few weeks we’ve been having a blue sky fall, which is quite nice also.  Hopefully it will hold out for a trip to go pumpkin picking this weekend.  (confession: I had pumpkin pie for breakfast, mmmm)  Anyhow, here are a few more wee paintings that have a very winter feel.  I’m off to go riding then some more painting.  Have a wonderful weekend!

a new favorite

Yesterday I mentioned the new series of tiny paintings I have in the works to debut at little winter.  What I didn’t share is, that I am addicted to these little guys!  I think it’s because they are so different from the large paintings I have been working on that can take months to complete.  It is a nice break to sit down and see a thought through to completion so quickly (they are 4″x4″).  Oh, and they will all come framed.  This is my new favorite of the ones I’ve completed so far.

big and small

These are a couple new paintings I’ve been working on for a bit.  The first is quite large and still has a little more work to go.  The second is quite small and just completed.
